Tracer is a research lab focused on how AI systems allocate intelligence across tasks, with research on model routing, data economics, and the systems connecting technical performance to commercial outcomes. Its Echo model is built from ensembles of specialist open models that operate as a single system, providing a single endpoint that adjusts the amount of intelligence applied to each task and can be customized to a specific workload.

Echo is available through an OpenAI-compatible interface. The lab also publishes research and open-source work, including a paper on learning when to defer classification calls to an LLM, where a lightweight surrogate trained from production traces handles predictable inputs locally and defers uncertain cases to the original model.
