OpenMRS is an open-source electronic medical records system developed and maintained by a global community of developers, implementers, and health organizations. It addresses the need for configurable clinical records across diverse settings, from primary care and specialty centers to hospital-based inpatient care, with no license fees or vendor lock-in.
The platform includes clinical documentation, diagnosis tracking, flexible forms with a Form Builder, registration, appointments, queues, billing, stock management, and lab handling. It supports role-based access with granular permissions, audit logging, configurable translation with right-to-left language support, clinical data reporting and exports, and connections to research tools including the OHDSI ecosystem and OMOP CDM. Interoperability is provided through REST and FHIR APIs for integration with ERP systems, lab systems, DHIS2, national health exchanges, and other tools. Releases include new features, updates, and security patches, with a public roadmap.
OpenMRS is intended for health facilities ranging from small clinics to large healthcare networks, as well as implementers and development teams. The source code is open and freely available for download, with a demo site using sample data for evaluation. The pages do not describe a formal free plan, trial period, or seat-based or usage-based packaging for the software itself.
