LinguaLibre
Participative linguistic media library of Wikimedia France
Lingua Libre is a participative linguistic media library run by Wikimédia France that builds a collaborative, multilingual audiovisual corpus under free licence. It addresses the underrepresentation of languages online and the barriers that written-only platforms create for oral and signed languages, particularly minority, regional and poorly endowed ones. Recordings of words, phrases and proverbs are intended to support online language communities and to feed Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia and Wiktionary.
The Record Wizard lets contributors record short audio items from a computer or smartphone, categorize them and publish them to Wikimedia Commons; an account is required. Recordings can be explored and reused, and the site's pages can be edited by logged-in users, with substantial changes discussed with the community beforehand. Interaction takes place through a chat room, mailing list, Discord, Phabricator and GitLab, and a help page provides a user guide. The project is available in numerous interface languages.
Lingua Libre is aimed at language communities, contributors and specialists working with spoken or signed languages, as well as anyone wishing to explore or reuse the corpus. Participation is free and open through a user account; no paid editions, trials or seat-based or usage-based packaging are described.
