Let's Encrypt
Encryption for everybody
Let's Encrypt is a free, automated, and open Certificate Authority operated by the nonprofit Internet Security Research Group (ISRG). It issues TLS certificates that enable HTTPS encryption for websites, helping site operators secure their servers and improve privacy on the Web. Certificate issuance requires demonstrating control over the domain being secured.
The service supports automated certificate issuance and renewal through ACME clients, with recommended clients available for web server software. Issuance and revocation records are publicly available for inspection, and the ACME protocol is published as an open standard. Documentation covers the certificate issuance process and security best practices, and a community forum provides technical assistance. ISRG also operates Prossimo, focused on memory safety in Internet infrastructure, and Divvi Up, a privacy-respecting metrics system using Multi-Party Computation.
Let's Encrypt is intended for anyone who owns a domain name and wants to enable HTTPS, from individual site operators to organizations. Certificates are provided at zero cost, with no paid editions or seat-based plans described. The project is funded through donations and corporate sponsorship.
