Leafnode
An easy-to-use NNTP news proxy for Unix/Linux systems
Leafnode is an open-source store-and-forward NNTP proxy that acts as both a client and a server, supporting TCP connections over IPv4 and IPv6. It gives a regular newsreader offline functionality, merges articles from several upstream newsservers for newsreaders that only support one server well, and avoids duplicate news downloads for a small LAN with multiple users. It is intended for use at home or in small offices, and is not designed for large user or newsgroup counts.
Leafnode can run unattended and recover from most problems without user intervention. It requires no upstream newsfeed configuration, appearing to the upstream server as a regular newsreader. It automatically determines which newsgroups are read locally, downloads them, and stops downloading from newsgroups that have not been read locally. Filters can limit the number of articles downloaded, their size, or exclude articles with particular headers using Perl-compatible regular expression matching. A mode can optionally download only headers in a first run, with full article texts downloaded in a subsequent run. Leafnode works with most common newsreaders via NNTP or traditional spool access, and runs on Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, and most Unix flavours. It is available free of charge as open-source software.
