IPFS
Content addressing for data with confidence
IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) is a set of open-source tools for content addressing, which identifies data by its content rather than its location. This approach solves the problem of data verifiability and portability across different networks, allowing systems to be built that are resilient to server failures and network changes.
The IPFS constellation includes tools for addressing data with CIDs (content identifiers), transport-agnostic retrieval over protocols like HTTP, libp2p, and QUIC, and data serialization with IPLD formats such as DAG-CBOR and DAG-JSON. It offers libraries in Go, TypeScript, Rust, Python, and Java, and supports public, hybrid, and private network configurations. Key components include Kubo, Helia, iroh-blobs, and IPFS Cluster for pinning and replication.
IPFS is designed for developers and organizations building verifiable data systems, from open social networks and scientific research to secure messaging and resilient web publishing. It is available as free, open-source software with no licensing fees, and can be used via self-hosted nodes, hosted pinning services, or integrated into applications through its libraries and APIs.
