It addresses the need for faster, more secure endpoints by providing quick startup times and automatic background updates, while supporting both local installation via USB and remote deployment at scale through the cloud.
Key capabilities include device management through the Google Admin console, where administrators can apply policies, configure ChromeOS features, provide access to internal VPNs and Wi-Fi networks, and force-install apps and extensions. Mass deployment is supported through Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) and Windows Deployment Services (WDS). Cameyo by Google is available to convert legacy applications into progressive web applications accessible from the app shelf without VPNs or virtual desktops. Certified device models are listed for compatibility checking, and an assessment tool provides personalized compatibility reports and setup guides.
ChromeOS Flex is intended for businesses and organizations managing existing PC and Mac fleets. The operating system itself is provided free of charge. Managed devices require ChromeOS Enterprise Upgrade or ChromeOS Education Upgrade for each device before enrollment in the Google Admin console. A free trial is available for ChromeOS device management, and an upgrade path to ChromeOS Enterprise offers advanced security controls, granular policy settings, and support.
