The tool performs a set of tests against common system binaries and commands, and maintains a list of known rootkits, worms and LKMs it can detect. Version 0.59 (released Jan 01 2026) added checks for processes executed from memory, new commands for nologin, XZ Backdoor and Bottkitty (UEFI Bootkit), plus bug fixes. Chkrootkit is free software, with donations accepted via PayPal, Bitcoin and Patreon.
