ChartDB is a database diagramming and data modeling tool that generates entity-relationship diagrams from a single query against a database schema, without requiring direct database access. It addresses the problem of understanding and documenting database schemas when diagrams are outdated or unavailable, or when access to a production database is not possible or safe.
The tool provides an import-edit-export workflow: schemas are imported via a single query, edited in a visual editor with undo, redo, table and relationship management, and exported as DDL scripts in a chosen SQL dialect or as images. It supports MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, SQLite, ClickHouse, CockroachDB, Oracle, Snowflake, and BigQuery. Additional capabilities include automatic database sync, real-time collaboration, schema change tracking with diffs and version history, embedded diagrams, a DBML editor, and an AI diagram generator that creates ER diagrams from prompts and suggests missing foreign keys, color-coded table categories, and soft-delete columns.
ChartDB is available as a self-hosted open-source project under the AGPL license and as a hosted cloud service that runs in the browser. The cloud version offers a free plan and a free trial, with no credit card required to start. It is aimed at developers, data analysts, product teams, educators, and auditors working with database schemas.
